The two major trade unions in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike, starting Wednesday, November 8, over last week’s attack on the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo state.

The leadership of the NLC and TUC, who announced the development on Friday at a press briefing, issued a 6-point communique to the Federal Government, which included the immediate removal of the Imo Commissioner of Police and the Owerri Area Commander, among others, for their alleged involvement in the brutalization and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.

Ajaero was reportedly captured and brutalized during the organized labour protest in Imo and whisked away by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

He later appeared with bruises on his face, which showed that he was manhandled.

The Publicity Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Benson Upah, had said Ajaero could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, due to the degree of injuries he sustained in the attack.
