The Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA) has been urged to focus firmly on sanitizing the Oil City.
The Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), Orhue 1, made the call when the Director-General of the Agency, Prince Godwin Ejinyere, led a delegation of the management team of the establishment on a sensitization visit to his palace.
The Okpe Monarch noted that a lot needed to be done on the side of government and the people to bring sanity to the Agency’s mandate areas, pointing out that while approved dump sites were not readily available for proper disposal of waste, some residents had chosen to dump their refuse indiscriminately in defiance of extant laws.
He said the law enforcement agencies must live up to their responsibilities, adding that the Agency should collaborate with the relevant authorities with a view to ensuring proper waste management.
The Royal Father charged Prince Ejinyere to enforce the relevant laws in dealing with offenders to serve as a deterrent to others, assuring the Agency of his maximum support at all times.
Orhue 1, stressed the importance of the Agency to the socioeconomic life of Warri, Uvwie and the environs and appealed to the state government to adequately fund the establishment to enable it succeed.
Also speaking during an earlier visit to Okpe Local Government Council, the Chairman, Hon. Isaiah Esionwa, thanked the WUEDA DG for the sensitization visit and pledged support for the Agency.
Prince Ejinyere had told the Council Chairman and the Okpe Monarch that the visit was to intimate them with the activities of the Agency and solicit their support in sensitizing the people on what was expected of them.
The DG said Orerokpe was a part of the Agency’s mandate area, adding that a lot would be done to change the face of the Oil City, even as he warned that it would no longer be business as usual for the residents.
He told Hon Esionwa and Orhue 1 that the Flyover projects recently awarded to Julius Berger by the Oborevwori administration would, on completion, significantly address the problem of gridlock in Warri and the environs, as well as provide job and business opportunities for residents.
Okakuro Ejinyere disclosed that an aggressive media campaign had commenced to keep residents abreast of the activities of the Agency, after which town hall meetings would follow to further educate the people.
The DG said the enlightenment campaign, which continues with visits to other Council Chairmen and traditional rulers in the mandate areas, would be followed by clean up exercises in parts of the Oil City.
