The Police in Delta have warned youths in the state to desist from jungle justice, describing it as an act of self-help and barbaric.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP Wale Abass, who gave the warning while briefing newsmen on the achievements recorded from July 1, 2923 to date, said jungle justice festered a circke of violence and lawlessness, thereby sabotaging the prospect of protecting the fundamental human rights of the victims.

He noted that on several occasions victims of self-help were attacked based on frivolous allegations without being given access to fair hearing, stressing that the Command would no longer tolerate such an abuse, and anyone caught would be dealt with according to the law.

The CP recalled that the Acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, had, at a strategic police managers conference sometime in June, revealed that his goal was to stamp out violent crimes and increase safety and security in the country.

The State Police helmsman said the Command under his watch had since keyed into the vision and mission of the Acting IGP, pointing out that part of his first major shake-off was the redeployment of the then DPO Ovwain Aladja to Ekpan due to the volatile nature of that area.

He said with that development, Ekpan which used to be a troubled area was now safe for residents to go about their lawful businesses, adding that in the month of September security strategies were reviewed on Jesse road, where kidnapping was on the increase, culminating in the deployment of DOPs Buffalo Team, Tactical Teams and the Command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad to the area.

The strategy, according to him, paid off as some suspected kidnappers were arrested, while a good number of Assault rifles were recovered within a short time of implementation.

CP Abass revealed that in the last three months, 13 kidnappers, 7 armed robbers and 72 cultists were arrested, while 9 kidnapped victims were rescued, and 54 firearms, 286 ammunition and 195 cartridges recovered.

He thanked the State Government for its unwavering support for the Command, and commended the various sister security agencies for their continuous collaboration with the Command.

The Police boss also commended residents of the state who had continued to support the Command by providing useful, timely and credible information.
