Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Arthur Akpowowo, has underscored the importance of the media in national development.
Akpowowo, who made the remark in Asaba when Correspondents of the media organisations covering the activities of the State Assembly paid him a courtesy visit, commended the press crew for effectively projecting the image of the House to the outside world.
The Deputy Speaker said the 8th Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor would continue to provide a conducive environment for the Correspondents to discharge their duties.
He urged the Journalists not to rest on their oars in their agenda setting role in the society and assured of his preparedness to continually partner with them in ensuring that the state enjoyed the benefits of robust legislations.
In his words, “As Lawmakers, if we must succeed in our legislative assignments, there is the need for us to continue to partner with the media as we cannot undermine the importance of the press.
“Here in Delta and, particularly, in this 8th Assembly, I promise that we will continue to work with the press.
“This is important because, we need you to not only inform the people about what we are doing here, but to also put us on our toes in the execution to our cure mandate”.
While commending the immediate past Speaker of the House and Current Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his enduring legacies, Akpowowo said the 8th Assembly would not only sustain the tempo, but would strive to surpass the achievements of the former Speaker.
“We are not competing with him, but it is a known fact that he has laid a super structure and it is only normal that we sustain the tempo and, indeed, do “MORE”, Akpowowo stressed.
Earlier, the House of Assembly Correspondents told Akpowowo that they were in his office to congratulate him on his emergence as Deputy Speaker and assured him of their preparedness to continue to discharge their duties professionally.
