A political pressure group in Delta state, committed to the prevalence of equity, justice and fairness in the society, the Mid-Westerners, has applauded the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for transforming the state beyond expectations as his administration winds down.
At a press conference in Asaba on Thursday, the Executive Vice Chairman of the group, Prof David Ejenobo, noted that Senator Okowa exhibited uncommon leadership qualities early in his political career, which saw him rising from a stint in the defunct Ika local government, to become a Commissioner, Secretary to the State Government, Senator and Governor of Delta state.
Prof Ejenobo said though the Governor came to power in 2015 when the nation’s economy was in bad shape, he quite understood how to navigate the storm as he quickly intiated the SMART AGENDA of his administration, which delivered Prosperity to All Deltans.
The Executive Vice Chairman specifically pointed out the great impact of the Okowa administration in the education sector, narrowing down to the focus on the development of primary, secondary, technical and tertiary education, as well as the priority given to the welfare of teachers, stressing that the icing on the cake was the establishment of three new Universities in the state, when some states were struggling to manage one.
He said Governor Okowa used his first term in office to construct over 2,000 kilometers of road and 1,400 kilometers of drainage channels across the three senatorial districts of the state, which earned him the epitaph, ‘Road Master’, imagining the huge capital outlay of constructing roads and drains in some difficult terrains of the state.
On infrastructure, Prof Ejenobo said the Okowa administration had given the state capital a befitting status with the construction of a world-class secretariat complex for the MDAs, the Koka Junction Flyover/Interchange, the Marian Babangida Leisure Park, the Traditional Rulers’ Council secretariat, the storm drainage channels, which had significantly addressed the problem of flooding in the State Capital Territory.
He congratulated the State Governor-elect, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, on his March 18 electoral victory and reminded him that Governor Okowa had set a benchmark that would guide him to succeed in the implementation of his M.O.R.E Agenda.
Prof Ejenobo listed areas the group would want the incoming administration to focus on as rural road infrastructure, improved human capital development and review of retirement age of Delta civil servants to 65 years.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the group and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Hon Iwemdi Nwaham, regretted that the developmental strides of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the past eight years were not adequately publicized to the people and blamed the situation on lack of coordination on the part of the Governor’s information managers.
Hon Nwaham advised the incoming Governor to put in place a robust and strategic information management team to adequately publicize the achievements of his administration.
