The Executive Secretary of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Dr. Sunny Oritshedere, has bagged an Excellence Award of the Independent Community Newspaper Publishers’ Forum, Delta state chapter.

The award was presented to him on Monday by the State Chairman of the Forum, Prince Charles Umejei, in a brief but colourful ceremony in Asaba

Prince Umejei said Community Newspaper Publishers in the state had closely monitored the activities of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board under Oritshedere’s watch and were satisfied with the reforms he had brought to the Board.

He noted that the Board had lessened the burden of childrens’ education on parents in the state through consistency in the    payment of bursary to students of tertiary institutions and scholarship awards to deserving ones

Prince Umejei stated that the award was in recognition of Oritshedere as a performing public officer and in appreciation for the value he had added to the operations of the Board as a public institution.

In his remarks after receiving the award, Dr Sunny Oritshedere said he came to the Board with the intention of strengthening the establishment for better service delivery.

Dr Oritshedere revealed that regular payment of bursary to students of tertiary institutions in the state had remained a priority to the Board, while the various scholarship schemes had been strengthened to make them more effective and impactful to the beneficiaries.

The ES said the Overseas scholarship scheme for First Class graduates, which was discovered to have been abused by some beneficiaries in the past, had been reviewed by the Board to ensure that the beneficiaries were truly studying abroad.

He disclosed that over 400 children of deceased civil servants were enjoying the state government’s scholarship, just as some physically challenged persons, including one that had been admitted to study a Doctorate degree programme, were under the sponsorship of the state government.

Dr Oritshedere, who dedicated the award to the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the management and staff of the Board, thanked the Independent Community Newspaper Publishers’ Forum for the honour done him and encouraged the group to continue to make itself relevant in the highly competitive media space.
