A former member of the Delta State House of Assembly an guyd one of the observers for the 2023 general election, Hon (Barr) Chinwe Monu, has said allocating billions of tax payers money for the conduct of elections every four years in Nigeria is tantamount to a waste of resources if Nigerians do not have confidence in the electoral process.

Hon Monu, an Asaba Palace Chief, noted that the huge sums of money at the disposal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) preparatory to every election were enough to get things right and make the Commission truly independent.

She, however, stated that the conduct and outcome of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections did not suggest that INEC was to be trusted, as the elections fell far short of both local and global expectations.

Citing the situation in her ward 5 unit 3 in Asaba, Oshimili South LGA during the March 18 Governorship and House of Assembly elections, the former Delta Commissioner for Commerce and Industry observed that the zeal and enthusiasm demonstrated by voters during the Presidential election were not just there as Nigerians were not satisfied with the outcome of the elections, and were discouraged to vote in the March 18 exercise.

The Election Observer said INEC must be adequately prepared for the conduct of future elections in the country, stressing that the Commission needed to go back to the drawing board, critically review its past elections, identify the lapses in the processes and show genuine commitment to avoiding the mistakes that discredited previous elections, particularly the February 25 polls
