DELTA CP ARMS ANTI-CULT VOLUNTEER CORPS OFFICIALS WITH PARAPHERNALIA OF OFFICE

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP Ali Mohammed Ari, has charged members of the Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps (AVC) to live above board in the discharge of their duties and shun acts inimical to the realization of the set objectives of the Corps.

CP Ali Ari gave the charge on Friday in Asaba at the unveiling of new kits, ID card and installation of new patrons of the Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps in the state.

The police boss urged the crime fighters to smoke out moles who sold out intelligence to criminals, insisting that they should not allow saboteurs in their midst.

He appreciating the efforts of the Volunteers in combating the menace of cultism in the state, the CP reminded them that the service was humanitarian, urging them to be guided by the rule of civility.

CP Ari noted that the idea of community policing was to enhance crime fighting as the police could not do it alone, pointing out thatthe Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps, vigilante groups and hunters had all been engaged to help the police to fight crime and ensure the safety of life and property in the state 

In his remarks, the Officer-in-Charge, Special Anti-Cultism Unit, SP Chris Ugbaji, extolled the efforts of the late President of the Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps, Austyne Emuamaka, and encouraged the volunteers to be just in their dealings, apply proper discretion and avoid being a tool for perpetuating evil.

In a keynote address, the President of the Youth Wing of the TT Urhobo Progress Union, Comrade Kelly Umukoro, tasked the AVC members on the need to know and identify the types of crimes prevalent in their immediate communities.

Comrade Umukoro noted that community policing made the police and the local communities to operate as friends, and called on all community leaders to support the police and other security agencies in the effort to prevent the commission of crimes.

He commended the Delta State Police Command for its understanding of the importance of community policing which he said had been demonstrated in times past. 

The youth leader, however, advised the police to always ensure that the identities of local informants and whistleblowers were protected to sustain information gathering and better working of the community policing system which had been of great benefit to the country.

Another speaker at the event and Nollywood actor, Dr Emeka Udeolise, lauded the formation of the Volunteer Corps and solicited support for the organization to enable it adequately sensitize young Nigerians on the need to stay away from crimes.

Dr Udeolise called on parents and community leaders to bolster the efforts of other stakeholders in creating awareness against cultism.

In his remarks, the President of the Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps, Amb. Uche Nwahandi, implored his members to operate in line with the laid down rules and be good ambassadors of the Corps in their various communities.

He commended the Commissioner of Police for his support for the AVC.

Highpoints of the event were the unveiling of AVC’s new kits for male and female volunteers, official signing of their ID Card by the Commissioner of Police, investiture of new patrons and a one minute silence in honour of late Austyne Emuamaka.
