The Deputy President of the Senate and Delta State APC Governorship candidate for the 2023 general election, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, on Thursday, at a world press conference in Asaba to formally present himself for the race and unveil his manifesto, berated the Okowa administration for allegedly not utilizing the humongous funds that have accrued to the state under his watch to meaningfully impact on the lives of the people.
Omo-Agege had, among other things, alleged that the Okowa administration had ‘swallowed’ over N2.8 trillion in seven years without any commensurate infrastructural development to show for it across the state.
He also accused the Okowa administration of piling up debts, with the state now ranking the second most indebted in the country, according to the Debt Management Office.
The APC chieftain described the choice of Sheriff Oborevwori as Delta PDP Governorship candidate as a bad one, as it exemplified everything that had gone wrong with the Okowa administration in the past seven years, even as he said Sheriff would be Okowa’s stooge if elected Governor of Delta state.
But responding to Omo-Agege’s comments while briefing the press shortly after, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said they only confirmed the emptiness of the APC Governorship candidate, whom he accused of not being knowledgeable about the happenings in the governance of the state.
Aniagwu said Omo-Agege was only feeding Deltans with lies and had allowed his already failed Governorship ambition to becloud his sense of judgement, wondering how such a man could be Governor of a highly sensitized state like Delta.
The Commissioner noted that Omo-Agege should not claim not to appreciate the fact that the many motorable roads in Asaba, Warri and other parts of the state, including bridges in the riverine areas, were not there before the inception of the Okowa administration.
He added that the Asaba airport, through which the APC stalwart travelled in and out of the state was not in its present state seven years ago, with several legacy projects, including the gigantic secretariat complex named after the Asagba of Asaba, Prof Chike Edozien, executed by Okowa, pointing out that even his Orogun community had benefitted from Okowa’s infrastructural development initiatives.
Aniagwu maintained that the State Executive Council in most of its meetings usually gave approvals for new projects in different sectors across the state, in compliance with due process, pointing out that government had always funded its projects to ensure that none was abandoned.
The Information Commissioner described as false Omo-Agege’s claim that Delta ranked second most indebted state in the country as government had always serviced its loans, even as he said the Federal Government under the leadership of the APC had accumulated foreign debts more than any other previous administration in the country.
On the PDP Governorship candidate, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Aniagwu said his choice was appropriate, assuring Deltans that if elected Governor he would not only consolidate the achievements of the Okowa administration but also take more development to every nook and cranny of the state.
He boasted that APC would be roundly defeated in the forthcoming elections at the federal and state levels.
