In readiness for the predicted flooding of coastal states, including Delta, by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the State Inter- ministerial Flood Disaster Management Committee has adopted a 3-phased approach to contain the flood and ameliorate the plights of the victims.

The Director General, Delta State Orientation Bureau, Mr Eugene Uzum, who stated this at a press briefing on the state’s response to the flooding already experienced in parts of the state, listed the approaches as aggressive sensitization and advocacy, preparations for the opening of camps for flood victims and closure of camps upon receding of flood waters.

He said as part of measures to reduce the effect of flooding in the local government areas highlighted in the flood advisory issued by the weather forecast agencies, the State Ministry of Environment was currently opening up blocked drains, canals and waterways, while the Bureau of Special Duties and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had commenced the preparation of nine camps for flood victims in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Uzum added that officials of the Ministries of Energy, Transport, Health, among others, had been mobilized to work with the Bureau of Special Duties and SEMA to ensure that nothing was left to chance in government’s efforts to provide succour to flood victims in the state.

The DG confirmed that several communities across the state had been submerged in flood and people displaced from their traditional habitats, disclosing that plans were on to ensure their relocation, safety and well-being.

On security, Uzum stated that government was in touch with the security agencies for the purpose of ensuring the safety of flood victims in the various camps, pointing out that the Flood Disaster Management Committee had devolved to sub- committees and moved to different parts of the state to monitor and evaluate the situation on ground for further necessary action.

He further stated that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education had been directed to provide a platform for the education of displaced pupils and students in the camps.

The DG called on public spirited Deltans, Multi National Corporations, International Oil Companies, among others, to assist in providing relief materials and other basic needs of the flood victims in the camps.
