Ahead of the 2023 general elections, politicians have been asked to engage in issue based campaigns rather than tendencies that will not promote peace and growth of the nation.
The advice is contained in a 4-point communiqué issued by the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council at the end of its meeting in Asaba.
Delivering the communiqué, the Chairman of the Council and Orodje of Okpe, Major General, Felix Mujakpuero (rtd), Orhue 1, enjoined the political class to be civil and shun character assassination of political opponents under the guise of campaign, insisting that they must conduct themselves with decorum and political maturity during the electioneering period.
The monarchs reminded Nigerians that the country belonged to all of us, adding that politicians should guard against the tendency of dividing the people along political, religious and ethnic cleavages.
They maintained that candidates for the various elective positions should address critical development issues that would put the nation back on track and on the trajectory of sustainable socio economic and infrastructural development.
The royal fathers appreciated the Delta State Governor and Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, for his exceptional love and respect for traditional rulers in Delta state and pledged their continued support for his administration.
They described Governor Okowa as a thorough bred leader who had been able to successfully manage the affairs of Delta state, even in the face of economic challenges.
The traditional rulers sympathized with the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Dr Ari Mohammed Ali, over the death of three police officers in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area, saying that they were deeply pained by the death of the officers.
They prayed God to grant the families of the deceased officers the fortitude to bear the loss.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers across the three senatorial districts of the state including the First Vice Chairman of the Council and Pere of Akugbene Mien Kingdom, Pete SP Luke Kalanama V111 and the Second Vice Chairman, Agbogidi Obi Henry Kikachukwu 1, of Ubulu-Uno, among others
