Delta State University, Abraka, Ethiope East Local Governnent Area, has taken a place of pride as one of the best State Universities in Nigeria.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga, stated this on Monday in Abraka at a world press conference to herald the events lined up for the 30th anniversary and 14th convocation ceremonies of the institution.

Prof. Egwunyenga said the institution, which he joined at inception in its first academic session in 1992, had grown from a one Faculty University with a student population of less than 1000 to a citadel of learning with 12 Faculties, over 85 Departments, no fewer than 100 academic programmes, 27 Directorates and Research Centres, Postgraduate School and a student population of about 30,000.

The VC said on assumption of office in December 2019, he was determined to lead, inspire and advance the transformation of the University, a strategy that had placed the institution on track in realizing its set goals as enshrined in the law establishing it.

He disclosed that DELSU now placed 14th among best Universities in Nigeria by the 2021 ranking of over 200 Nigerian Universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the 4th best State University in the country.

Prof. Egwunyenga also pointed out that the University ranked the 2nd best in the South South geo – political zone, the 3rd State University nationwide with the highest number of Professors, the 5th most efficient State University, the 3rd highest ranking State University with per capital h-index, the 4th highest ranking State University in knowledge economy in the country, among other honours.

On the remaining activities for the 30th anniversary and 14th coronation ceremonies, the VC said a convocation lecture by the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, would hold on Wednesday, April 27, at 750A Lecture Hall, site 111, Abraka, at 10am, to be followed by a cocktail at the VC’s Lodge and a convocation drama by the Department of Theatre Arts at 4pm.

According to him, the 30th anniversary thanksgiving is billed for Thursday, April 28, at the convocation arena, site 111, Abraka, at 8:30am, with the University’s Founders’ Day celebration following closely, while a commemorative lecture to be delivered by Prof. Patrick Lumumber from Kenya would take the stage at the 1000 Lecture Hall, site 111, Abraka, at 1pmĀ 

The launching of the Commemorative Block of DELSU at 30 and Luncheon would also take place same day, while on Friday, April 29, there would be alumni  novelty football match at 9am, a carnival at 10am,. alumni engagement from 4pm to 6pm, and VC’s Award and Commendation Day.

Prof. Egwunyenga stated that the convocation ceremony would hold on Saturday, April 30, with award of Diplomas, admission to First Degrees, Higher Degrees and presentation of prizes, while there would also be investiture of Professor Emeritus on Prof. Eric Arubayi and Prof. Sam Ukala (posthumously), as well as conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on retired Justice Francis Tabai and Chief Jim Ovia.

That would be after the commissioning of projects by the State Governor and Visitor to the University, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, at 9am.

The projects include Faculty of Pharmacy complex, access roads to the Faculty of Pharmacy, Animal House and Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts complex, Department of Nursing Science extension, Educational Technology Building, as well as the laying of foundation stone of Faculty of Management Sciences complex.
