The death has occured of a popular Yoruba monarch, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, at the age of 83.

The third Alaafin from the Alowodu Ruling House reportedly died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado – Ekiti, after a protracted illness.

He was crowned on November 18, 1970, after the death of his predecessor, Oba Gbadegesin  Kadigbolu 1, and was on the throne for 52 years, making him the longest reigning Alaafin in history.

The Governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde, is expected to officially announce the passing of the revered monarch after being briefed on the incident by the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, who would take charge of Oyo town pending the installation of a new Alaafin.
