The people of Ikpide-Irri community, in Isoko South local government area of Delta State have applauded the quality of work so far done on the Ikpide-Irri road project.
In a solidarity march round the community, the people, who carried placards with inscriptions such as “Governor Ifeanyi Okowa we thank you for Ikpide-Irri road project”, God bless Governor Okowa,” Ikpide-Irri road is on course” , “High Chief Immanuel Omoefe we appreciate you”.
Speaking to newsmen, the President General of the community, Engr. Lucky Edemo, said the solidarity march was as a result of series of protests by some indigenes of the community who alleged that the contractor was doing a shoddy job despite the review of the contract by the Delta State Government.
Engr. Edemo stated that there was no problem with the road project, awarded to Portplus Limited, as the project was on going and they were satisfied with the services of the contractor.
He said all the sections that had been completed were motorable, pointing out that the alleged sub-standard job was the imagination of those who refused to appreciate the reality on ground.
The PG applauded the State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, for remembering and uplifting the community.
Also speaking, Chief Pius Otolo thanked God for the road project and commended Governor Okowa for the dividend of democracy.
“We don’t have oil, we don’t have any means of generating revenue for the state but they considered us and gave us this road project”, he said.
Hon. Humphrey Odi The councillor representing Irri ward eleven,Hon. Humphrey Odi, who is from the community, attributed the criticism of the road project to blackmail by some persons who had personal vendetta with the contractor handling the project.
“According to him “The community decided to come together in solidarity to tell the entire world that what has been trending in the media is not the reality on ground.
“The contractor is doing a good job, the job is standard, if you go round the neighbouring riverrine communities and see the roads been constructed you will find out that this project is the best.
The Site Engineer, Mr. Iyke Chidindu, said the Delta State Government gave the specifications to follow in constructing the road and they had not deviated.
He pointed out that the State Ministry of Works recently came to inspect the project and did not find anything to worry about.
