The recognition now being given to women in the affairs of Delta has been described as the best thing that has happened in the state since its creation.

The Commissioner for Lands and Surveys, Barr (Mrs) Kate Onianwa, stated this while speaking on the 30th anniversary of Delta State.

Mrs Onianwa said for the first time in history, five women were now Commissioners and members of the Delta State Executive Council, while 17 others were elected as Vice  Chairmen of Local Government Councils in the state.

She said governnent had also taken steps to protect the rights of women with the enactment of relevant laws, particularly the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law of Delta State, while the widows’ welfare scheme of the state government had given succour to many.

The Lands and Surveys Commissioner noted that women had over the years become more active in politics, which had helped to maintain stability in the polity and expressed happiness in the corresponding appreciation of the role of women in politics, especially by the Okowa administration.

Mrs Onianwa urged women in the state, particularly those in positions of authority, to give their best to justify the confidence reposed in them and create more opportunities for women to be in power at various levels of governance.

She congratulated Deltans on the 30th anniversary of the state’s creation and urged them to remain committed to the actualization of the Stronger Delta vision of the Okowa administration.
