Over 60 percent of transporters and motor park operators in Asaba have complied with the Delta State Passenger Welfare Scheme Law which requires them to capture their passengers in the scheme’s electronic manifest.

The General Manager of the scheme, Mr. Solomon Egharevba, disclosed this in Asaba while speaking with newsmen on the level of compliance with the scheme, which came into effect in 2002 after the enactment of the enabling law in the year 2000 by the Delta House of Assembly.

Mr. Egharevba said the aggressive sensitization campaigns mounted on the scheme were paying off as transport companies, especially in Asaba, had indicated interest in operating it, while passengers were eager to be manifested in the motor parks during travels for their own safety, as against boarding vehicles along the road with the attendant risks.

The General Manager explained that the scheme was structured to compensate would be accident victims, rescued alive or dead, adding that every passenger captured in the electronic manifest would receive an alert indicating that he or she had been insured for the journey in question.

He further disclosed that the slip to be issued to an insured passenger had a phone number on it which should be called in the event of an accident, assuring that a rescue team would arrive at the scene of accident in a matter of time.

Mr. Egharevba said the scheme’s underwriter is a reputable company and would not delay compensation after investigations and documentations of an accident, stressing that the scheme had come to stay as it was not a political gimmick.

On the claim by some transport companies that their vehicle insurance covered their passengers, the Delta State Passenger Welfare Scheme GM said there was no record of compensation to any accident victim by any transport company operating in the state, just as there was no data of accident victims.
