The State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has been commended for assenting to the Bills granting financial autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary in Delta State.
Guest speakers and participants at a two – day training workshop for Political Support Staff of members of the Delta State House of Assembly in Asaba, said the development woild strengthen both arms of government to operate independently.
The workshop, which came to a close on Tuesday, according to the facilitator of the programme, Mr John Mutu, was to enhance the capacity of the legislative aides in assisting their principals in their legislative and other leadership functions.
Mutu, a one time legislative aide and now Deputy National Team Leader of ECP, charged the participants to channel the knowledge gained at the workshop to helping their bosses to perform better in plenary and oversight duties.
He said aside Lagos State, Delta was the only state that had held such a training for political support staff, and commended the Speaker, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and his team for their commitment to promoting excellence in the state legislature.
The workshop facilitator acknowledged the harmonious working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature in Delta State, saying that the speed at which stakeholders facilitated the issue of financial autonomy for the legislature and judiciary in the state was commendable.
Mutu and the other two guest speakers at the workshop, Ambassador Jerry Ugokwe and Dr Jake Dan-azumi, expressed optimism that the granted financial autonomy would enhance the development of the legislature in Delta State and bring about more dividends of democracy to the various constituencies.
The Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Dr Ebenezer Okorodu, the Press Secretary to the Speaker, Ghene Igbogidi and the Principal Secretary to Hon Ferguson Onwo, Prince Enahoro Erijo, expressed profound gratitude to the leadership of the House for the training programme, noting that the knowledge acquired at the workshop would be relevant to their duties.
Okorodudu, Igbogidi and Erijo appreciated the robust working relationship between the various arms of government in the state, as well as among members of the state legislature, which they said had helped to enhance development in Delta State.

Other participants, including Mr Dennis Otu, Emmanuel Enebeli, Freeborn Eghagha and Martins Uko, enumerated the gains of the training workshop, stressing that it had helped in making them more responsive to their duties.
The Clerk of the House, Mrs Lyna Ocholor, had disclosed that the workshop was specifically put together for political aides to members of the 7th Assembly, stressing that it was aimed at exposing them to the principles, practice and procedure in a modern legislature.
The highlight of the training programme was the presentation of certificates of participation to the political aides.
