The Delta State Government has pledged its willingness to continue to support the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in the state to ensure that the objectives for which it was established are achieved.
The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, made the pledge on Friday in Asaba when he received the new NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Alao Olusegun, and the management team of the federal agency.
The SSG, who is also the Chairman of the State NYSC Governing Board, said the importance of the scheme could not be overemphasized as it had unified the country through cultural integration of the participants of the scheme which was the original idea of the founding fathers of the programme.
Chief Ukah assured the NYSC officials that the state government would ensure that Corps members posted to the state to serve were well catered for, pointing out that the state government had provided a lot of facilities for the NYSC regional office in Asaba and at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku.
He charged the NYSC to synergize with the Ministry of Education to harness the potentials of Corps members who could be of great benefit to the state in the area of teaching in schools.
The SSG stated that the Corps members could undergo crash programmes while in the Orientation Camp that would enable them fit into teaching in schools.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Alao Olusegun, commended the Delta State Government for its support for the NYSC scheme.
He said the Delta State Secretariat of the NYSC was quite appreciative of the state government’s swift intervention in providing temporary office accommodation for staff of the establishment after the recent fire incident in its office at the Federal Secretariat, Asaba.
Mr. Olusegun also noted that the Delta State NYSC Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku was one of the best in the country and this was as a result of the state government’s commitment to the welfare of Corps members in the state.
