Delta State Government has set machinery in motion to ensure effective refuse disposal ahead of the predicted flooding in the state.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Dr. (Mrs) Minnie Oseji, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Asaba, the state capital.

Dr Oseji, who led officials of the Ministry to monitor the clean up exercise, observed that some drains were completely silted with refuse generated by residential apartments and business premises in the city, a situation she noted would not only result in flooding, but also provide ready breeding grounds for vectors of infectious diseases.

’We have gone round and we found out that there are a lot of problems; the drains are full with refuse, the residents are not bagging their wastes appropriately; instead, they dump the waste in the drains thereby obstructing free flow of flood water when it rains.

‘’The Ministry needs the support of individuals and organisations. People can donate waste bins and refuse bags so that the residents will get used to the idea of proper waste management and not to see it as solely the responsibility of government.

‘’We are already coming out with a plan of action to ensure that residents do not dump refuse in the drains and the areas that require de-silting will be addressed to mitigate the impact of flood as the rains become heavier”.

She added that corporate organisations had been requested to partner with the state government in the areas of waste management and flood control.

The PS urged residents and business owners to bag their waste and use the appropriate refuse bins for easy evacuation, and warned that violators of environmental best practices would be prosecuted according to the law of the land.
