The Delta State Government has assured vigilante groups in the state of its continued support in whatever way feasible with a view to fighting crime in the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, gave the assurance while presenting cheques to the widows of Late Emeka Nwaedozie and Late Festus Monye, members of the Okpanam Community Vigilante who were shot dead by suspected herdsmen in Okpanam last year.
Chief Ukah noted that security was everyone’s business and so people must ensure that they alerted the security agencies anytime they noticed any security breach in their localities.
He said citizens must collaborate with the security agencies through intelligence gathering which he said would go a long way in addressing security challenges in the state.
The SSG commended members of the Okpanam Community Vigilante for their good work in securing their community from hoodlums and pledged a motorcycle to the group to help in their surveillance of the area.
Responding on behalf of the widows, Chairman of Okpanam Community Vigilante, Mr. Macaulay Ukah, thanked the state government for the financial assistance to the widows which he said would help to cushion the effect of the loss of their spouses.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of cheques to the widows.
