Delta State Commissioner for Housing, Chief Festus Ochonogor, has said the state government is focusing on the development of critical infrastructure to enhance governance, while encouraging  the private sector to build houses for the people.

Chief Ochonogor,.who was briefing newsnen on this year’s World Habitat Day celebration in Asaba, said lean resources was a major constraint to governnent, making it difficult to provide all the basic needs of the people at the same time.

He said governnent had built some housing units on Ibusa road, Asaba, while the Delta Development and Property Authority (DDPA) was working on 108 units of 6 flats for civil servants at the Junior Staff Quarters in Asaba.

The Housing Commissioner said governnent had provided the enabling environment for private property developers by making land available to them free of charge at Issele – Azagba and Ugbolu to enable them build affordable houses for the people to buy.

Chief Ochonogor added that the state owned mortgage institution, Delta Trust, was also giving out loans to viable cooperative societies to enable than provide houses for their members and advised such societies to key into the programme.
