The Director General, Warri/Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA), Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay, has affirmed that the master drainage project for the axis is going on as scheduled.
Macaulay, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG) while fielding questions from journalists in Warri after a visit to the project sites, said the work done so far was encouraging.
The project sites visited include Ugbolokposo, Alegbo, Uti, Apala, NPA Expressway and Edjeba in Warri south and Uvwie local government areas where he expressed satisfaction and commended the contractors – Levant Construction Limited and CCECC for their efforts in spite of the rains and the Covid-19 induced lockdown.
According to him, phases one and two were billed to be completed in 18 to 24 months, expressing the hope that the people of Warri/Uvwie axis would not be experiencing flooding in the next three to five years.
He maintained that this was the first time the state government had taken deliberate steps to tackle the issue of flooding in the area and commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his commitment to solving the perennial problem.
. Macaulay, however, urged owners of buildings and other structures blocking natural waterways to remove them, as the Agency would commence the demolition of all illegal structures before the end of August.
The Programme Manager, Levant Construction Limited, Engineer Ghassan Fadel, had told the WUEDA DG that the rains were hampering major works on the project, stressing that the swampy nature of the area aggravated by the heavy rains had been a hindrance to their speed and set target.
