President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday signed Executive Order No. 10 granting financial autonomy to the legislature and judiciary in the 36 states of the federation.
The President, who disclosed this on his Twitter handle, said his administration would continue to strengthen the principles and practice of democracy in Nigeria, pointing out that the assent was in exercise of the power vested in him under Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution (as Amended).
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the implementation of financial autonomy of the State Legislature and Judiciary would strengthen the institutions at the second tier of government and make them more independent and accountable in line with the tenets of democracy as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
