As part of measures to improve the welfare of health workers in the frontline on the fight against COVID-19, the Delta State Government, after due negotiations with the relevant health workers’ unions, has commenced payment of appropriate allowances to the health workers.
The State Commissioner for Health Dr. Mordi Ononye, disclosed this on Monday in Asaba at a press briefing on the State’s COVID-19 response.
He said the state government had also taken life insurance cover for 2,557 health workers to motivate them and had also provided for the welfare of health workers through its provision of needed Personal Protective Materials.
Dr. Ononye used the medium to appeal to Deltans and other residents to desist from stigmatization of COVID-19 positive persons, in order not to discourage people from showing up for testing.
The Health Commissioner stated that persons with respiratory symptoms or close contacts were in the habit of shying away from laboratory test or engaged in self medication, while some presented late which had accounted for fatalities.
He urged members of the public to observe all prescribed preventive measures such as hand and respiratory hygiene, use of face masks, and social/physical distancing.
For his part, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said every resident of the state owed it a responsibility to enforce the social/physical distancing directive..
