The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 60-year-old U.S. citizen in the state due to suspected complications from COVID-19.
The state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, who confirmed the incident in a telephone chat with our reporter, said the deceased was in Nigeria to visit her male facebook friend.
Inuwa said the woman was kept in a hotel in Warri before relocating to another hotel in Orerokpe with her lover where she was said to have presented with symptoms of cough, difficulty in breathing and stooling.
He stated that the American woman was taken to a hospital in Warri on Saturday when her condition deteriorated, but was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.
The CP confirmed that the male friend had been taken to the Warri isolation centre, pointing out that the samples of the dead woman and her lover had been taken for testing.
Inuwa said he had drawn the attention of the state Commissioner for Health to the development, expecting that he would contact the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), in view of the symptoms developed by the deceased.
