Persons living with disabilities in the state have decried the neglect of the deaf community in the sensitisation programme of the fight against COVID-19.
The Chairman of the Delta state chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, (JONAS WD), Mr Obruche Omor, who expressed the concern, noted that all the sensitization campaigns on the coronavirus across the country had failed to carry along the deaf because of the absence of signs interpreters.
Omor said the deaf were totally locked out in the awareness campaigns, adding that the interpreters were never used in state functions except in a few federal government programmes.
According to him, persons living with disabilities were the most vulnerable group in the fight against COVID – 19.
Omor, therefore, called for more enlightenment where sign interpreters and relevant stakeholders would be part of the sensitization programme in order to help drive the message to persons living with disabilities, who are more vulnerable to the disease.
