Ward six, comprising five quarters in Ibusa, Oshimili north local government area of Delta state, on Sunday distributed its share of the state government’s Covid – 19 response palliatives to residents of the quarters.
40 by 50kg bags of rice, 20 by 100kg bags of beans, cartons of Indomie Noodles, were among the items distributed, under the watch of the 15 member ward food bank committee, with the Chief Whip of the Delta State House of Assembly,
Honourable Pat Ajudua, as Head.
The committee includes two members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), two members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), a representative of the widow,s association and a representative of the traditional chief (Uwolo), in the ward.
Addressing the representatives of the five quarters, which also served as electoral cells, Honourable Ajudua said the palliatives were provided by the state government in keeping with a promise by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to ameliorate the sufferings of the people during the lockdown period, necessitated by the need to control the spread of the corona virus in the state.
Honourable Ajudua emphasized that the food items were for the vulnerable in the ward, irrespective of political affiliation, tribe or religion, stressing that the items should be delivered to the homes of the diokpas (oldest men) in the quarters, who would work with the executives of the quarters to reach out to the households.
She reminded the people that corona virus was real, advising them to adhere strictly to social distancing and other precautionary measures in the process of distributing the palliatives and as they stayed at home for the remaining period of the extended lockdown.
The ward chairman, Mr Afam Anyaobi, thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the Food Bank initiative, which he said would mitigate the impact of the lockdown on the people and commended the Governor for leading a good fight against the COVID – 19 in Delta state.
He assured that the food items would get to the target persons in the ward as directed by the state government and urged the representatives of the quarters to be guided by the template set for the exercise.
