When the Corona virus outbreak was recorded in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, in Central China in December, 2019, little was known about it until it became a pandemic, ravaging countries, causing many deaths and impacting negatively on the global economy.
The identity of all who tested positive for the virus across the globe, including Charles, Prince of Wales, British PM, Boris Johnson, actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, footballer Daniel Rugani, Idris Elda, among others were made public to buttress the seriousness of the pandemic and call for caution.
In Nigeria, Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state, Edo Speaker, Frank Okiye, , Atiku Abubakat’s son, Mohammed and Davido’s wife, Chioma, among others tested positive for coronavirus and the whole world knew about their cases.
Back in Delta, an index case was recorded on Tuesday, April 7, and the authorities refused to disclose the identity and location of the patient, just as one was confirmed dead by the state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, in his Facebook account on Thursday without any clew to his identity.
This is not the way to go.
Deltans reserve the right to know about COVID – 19 cases in the state to be able to avoid contact with family members, friends and colleagues of the patients.
Concealing information about such persons portends danger to the public and negates the fight against the spread of the virus.
The Delta State Government and all the authorities concerned should note that one cannot be blinded by a stick visible to him.
