The ensure a disease free trading environment, the Delta State Government on Thursday fumigated the popular Ogbogonogo marker in Asaba, the state capital.


The exercise was undertaken by the State Ministry of Environment, led by the Commissioner, Honourable Chris Onogba, who said it was prompted by the resurgence of diseases, prominent among which was the corona virus.


Onogba recalled that Ebola and Lassa Fever had reared their heads in the past, with the state battling them with every effort it could muster, stressing that the current corona virus pandemic was also being fought from all fronts, including environmental cleanliness.


The Environment Commission said the state government decided to carry out the fumigation this time of lockdown in the state when the traders were at home to ensure an efficient and effective exercise.


He disclosed that the exercise would be replicated in all the main markets in the state to ward off any threat to the health of traders and buyers alike.


Onogba renewed government’s call on Deltans and other residents of the state to abide by all precautionary measures earlier recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other relevant authorities.


The Commissioner later proceeded to the Oshimili south arcade ground where a temporary market had been set up for perishable goods traders from the Ogbogonogo market.


He urged the management of the market to avoid over crowding of the temporary market, while obeying other precautionary measures against Covid – 19, particularly hand washing, sanitizing and social distancing.
