Following the lockdown in Delta state over the state government’s resolve to prevent the spread of the corona virus to the state, prices of goods have gone up astronomically over the past few days.
Food items and protective materials such as face masks, hand gloves disinfectants, hand sanitizers, among others have gone beyond the reach of the masses.
Reacting to the development, an Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta state on Primary Healthcare, Dr. Aphonsus Ojo, said it was unfortunate that Nigerians would take advantage of an abnormal situation currently ravaging the world to rip off their fellow citizens.
Ojo, a former representative of the Ukwuani constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, wondered why Nigerians would not make sacrifices, especially in this trying times in the nation’s history by shunning profiteering at the expense of the majority of Nigerians.
The Executive Assistant said the fight against corona virus in Nigeria was a national cause which required the collective contribution of all irrespective of social status, describing the action of some traders in the COVID – 19 circumstance as unpatriotic.
He noted the success so far recorded in the fight against corona virus in the state, attributing it to the policy of government to develop and strengthen Primary Healthcare to support the state healthcare system in the attainment of quality service delivery in the health sector.
Ojo said the attention paid to training of Primary Healthcare workers by the Okowa administration contributed to the high standard of medicare in health institutions across the state, stressing that handling the corona virus issue was not a problem to health workers in the state as they were knowledgeable enough on preventive and curative practices.
The Executive Assistant urged Deltans to support the current efforts by government to stop corona virus from entering the state by abiding by all precautionary measures recommended by health authorities.
