COVID – 19: GOVT DIRECTIVES ON WORSHIP: Level Of Compliance In Asaba Churches

Living Faith Church, aka Winners Chapel,  Asaba, on Sunday did not open for service in compliance with government’s directive to mega churches to conduct their services via satellite.


The headquarters of the church on Ibusa road Asaba was under lock and key she our reporter visited about 8:30am, with security men manning the gate.


A member of the church said they had been directed to worship at home cells or connect to Android phones or satellite in response to the social distancing requirement.


Saint Joseph’s Pro Cathedral church on Nnebisi road did not also open for service, as the church auditorium was empty when our reporter visited.


The reporter was told that members of the church were advised to worship in other smaller parishes in view of the large number of worshippers that attend the church.


Service was in progress when gallant reporters got to the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter’s, Osadebe way Asaba, with hand washing apparatus strategically set up for worshippers to wash and sanitize their hands before entering the church hall.


Sitting arrangement was perfect with only two worshippers sitting on a pew and the number not exceeding 50 as directed by government.


The situation was the same at the Pasture of Life church, on Abuta lane, where Bishop Jude Akhere conducted the service with worshippers not exceeding 50 sitting up to six feet apart.


Hand washing apparatus was also placed at the entrance of the church to ensure that members washed and sanitized their hands.


There was a mild drama at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, celebration parish on Nnebisi road, where though hand washing facilities were put in place for members at the entrance, our reporter was not allowed to enter the church.


The development raised the suspicion that all was not well inside as a peep through the window confirmed that the church auditorium was over crowded.


Champions for Christ Chapel, opposite the Stephen Keshi stadium, conducted its service in line with government’s directives.


The Founder, Reverend Samuel Akpan – Isong, who preached on the Power of Healing, said the church was worried about the deadly corona virus pandemic, but was sure that God would heal the land.
