Critical stakeholders in the society have been urged to join in the fight to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and the girl child to ensure an enabled equal world.

The Provost, Federal College of Education ( Technical ) Asaba, Dr. Josephine Anene – Okeakwa, made the call in Asaba in a lecture to mark this year’s International Women’s Day with the theme: An Equal World Is An Enabled World; Asaba Women of Yesterday, Today and the Next Generation.

Dr. Okeakwa faulted the attitude of the society towards women at home and in work places and on communities, family units, employers of labour, trade unions, the media, law enforcements agencies and public institutions to lead in the fight for an equal world.

She commended the Asaba Development Union Women’s Wing (Home Based) for mobilizing women for the celebration and urged Asaba men known to be in control of decision making to consider the interest of women in their decisions.

Also speaking, the Omu of Okpanam, Obi Martha Dunkwu, who was Mother of the Day, maintained that gender equality would be difficult to achieve because God had placed man above the woman from creation, stressing that women should rather strive for equal access to education and equal opportunity to contribute meaningfully to nation building.

Earlier, the President, Asaba Development Union Women’s Wing, (Home Based) Honourable Chinwe Monu – Olarewaju, said the union was committed to propagating and promoting programmes aimed at the development of women and the girl child.

Honourable Olarewaju, a Barrister – at – Law, explained that the union decided to use this year’s celebration as an avenue to reflect on the challenges facing Asaba women and how best to address them in order to give the women enabled equal opportunities.

The International Women’s Day celebration featured a panel discussion and exhibition, among other activities.
