Delta State Government has dolled out N500m for payment of compensation to persons affected by the construction of the Owa – Nta gully erosion project, an intervention of the Delta State Government and the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Honourable Chris Onogba, led a team of both parties to the erosion site, which had washed away buildings, economic crops and other valuables for over three decades, for the presentation of cheques to the beneficiaries.
Onogba reiterated the commitment of the Delta State Government to alleviating the sufferings of the affected persons, assuring that they would be resettled within the next one week so that work could start in earnest.
He sympathised with the victims for the losses suffered and expressed the readiness of government to address the menace and reclaim lost lands.
A representative of NEWMAP, Mrs Ruth Mteshella, said the intervention became necessary because of the magnitude of devastation by the gully erosion, pointing out that Owa – Nta and some other erosion sites would benefit.
Some of the beneficiaries thanked the state government, particularly Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, for the intervention which they said would save them from the jaws of death
