Delta State Government has called on the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to reconsider its decision not to post Corps members to riverine areas of the state for security reasons.
The State Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, made the call on Thursday when he received the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Mrs Olutayo Samuel, in his office at Government House, Asaba.
The Deputy Governor said not posting Corps members to riverine areas of the state had denied the government, private institutions and the people of the benefits of the scheme hence the need to review the position.
He noted that the services of Corps members were needed in riverine areas to complement government’s efforts in the area of teaching as there was dearth of teaching staff in riverine schools.
Deacon Otuaro said the state government had taken steps to ensure peace in riverine areas, assuring that the safety of Corps members was guaranteed.
The Deputy Governor said despite the difficult terrain, the Nigeria Maritime University, Okenrekoko in Warri South West Local Government Area, with students from different parts of the country had never experienced security challenges.
He assured that the state government would deepen its partnership with the scheme to enable it achieve set objectives.
The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mrs Olutayo Samuel, said the management of the scheme was already looking into the issue, promising that Corps members would be posted to riverine areas in subsequent batches.
She said Warri South West and Udu local government areas were affected by the directive gue to security reasons, adding that with the improvement of security the decision would be reversed.
Mrs Samuel thanked the state government for its support and assistance to the NYSC in the state and solicited more partnership.
Present during the visit were the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Engineer Jude Sinebe and some members of the State Executive Council, including the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, among others.
