The Delta State Waste Management Board has clarified that the ongoing sensitization and enforcement of compliance with the Public Private Partnership in refuse disposal are targeted at ending indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the major towns and cities of the state.

The Chairman of the Board, Mr Emmanuel Chinye, made the clarification on Monday in Asaba in continuation of the sensitization and enforcement drive.

Mr Chinye said the Board was established to manage waste by ensuring their proper disposal in approved dump sites, stressing that indiscriminate dumping of refuse did not add up to the efficiency of the Board.

He said the Board would continue to maintain government approved dump sites across the state, pointing out that new ones would be created where they did not exist.

The WMB Chairman stated that a new dump site had been developed in Ughelli where a private one was hitherto in use, expressing optimism that the measure would check indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area.

Monday’s sensitization and enforcement drive took the WMB team to the Akwuofu area, on the Asaba – Ibusa road where some corporate clients and individuals were sanctioned for failing to register with the Private Sector Participants, PSPs.

Though the level of compliance was low, the team succeeded in registering some clients, while those who resisted registration were taken to a mobile court for prosecution.

The PSP in charge of the Akwuofu area, Aligbe Environmental services and that for Bonsac area, Weymo Excellent Services were on ground to guide the enforcement team and register new clients.
