The Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Christian Onogbo, has called on Deltans to do more to keep their environment clean as they prepare to usher in the new year.

Onogba, who was speaking on the achievement of his Ministry in the outgoing year, said everyone should be a stakeholder in environmental issues, as the environment belonged to no particular individual.

He stated that his Ministry rightly believed that people should take ownership of their environment,  just as they do to their property, and jealously guard it against abuse by ensuring that it was clean at all times.

The Commissioner said concerted efforts were made to rid the environment of waste, illegal structures and overgrown weeds in the State Capital Territory, pointing out that a great measure of success was achieved with the collaboration of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, the State Waste Management Board and the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation.

Onogba said reasonable success was also recorded in Warri, Uvwie and the Environs, where the focus was on the opening up of canals and evacuation of illegal dump sites.

He noted that it was not an easy task getting residents to obey environmental laws and wondered why any right thinking individual would wait to be compelled to keep his or her environment clean.

The Commissioner said the state government would continue to use different platforms, including the media, to sensitive the people on the need for attitudinal change towards the environment, promising that government would consolidate the much that was achieved in the outgoing year in the year 2020.
