The Government of Delta state has given approval for the recruitment of 71 medical staff, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses and laboratory technicians, for the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) Oghara.
The Head of the Civil Service of Delta state, Mr Reginald Bayoko, who disclosed this on Monday in Asaba at a press briefing to mark the 2019 Public Service Week celebration, said nod had also been given for the engagement of 100 workers for the State Fire Service.
Bayoko said the recruitment process was ongoing, adding the the approvals underscored government’s commitment to addressing unemployment.
He disclosed that there had been an expansion of the state’s workforce since 2015 through recruitment, pointing out that 1000 teachers were recruited by the Post Primary Education Board, 109 senior staff absorbed into the mainstream civil service, while the appointment of 20 casual staff were regularised.
On the fate of the 1,500 workers recruited by the Uduaghan administration, but sacked by the present administration, the Head of Service said the committee set up to review the recruitment exercise had submitted its report to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who had mandated the State Civil Service Commission to take up the matter.
Bayoko expressed optimism that those affected would soon receive their appointment letters.
He put the staff strength of the state public service as at November 30, 2019 at 43,904, while 1,422 workers had exited the service in the past four years through retirement, death, withdrawal, resignation, dismissal, abscondment and verification committees.
