The Delta State Post Primary Education Board has commenced the process of filling existing vacancies for principals of public secondary schools in the state.

In all 50 schools have vacancies for principal following the elevation of some principals to Permanent Secretaries and other vacancies created by retirement and death.

The Board held the screening exercise involving about 300 officers due for promotion to Principal Merit Grade on Monday, December 9, through Tuesday, December 10, where the candidates, though all qualified, were subjected to written examinations and oral interview.

The chairman of the Board, Mrs Christiana Etaluku, said the new selection process was an innovation to the old order of picking from the set of level 16 officers based on seniority, pointing out that the paradigm shift was to ensure that principals were appointed on merit.

Mrs Etaluku said inviting all the candidates to Asaba for the screening was not only to give them a sense of belonging, but also to afford the Board the opportunity of meeting them one on one, with a view to determining their mental, physical and moral uprightness, in view of the complexity of the present day school system.

She explained that experienced principals in the system would be posted to bigger and older schools with vacancies, while the first timers would be posted to smaller schools where they would be expected to develop leadership skills and garner experience.

The PPEB chairman said existing vacancies in the Principal Merit Grade cadre would continue to be filled from the pool of level 16 officers, but maintained that selection would be purely on merit.
