Women journalists in Delta state have been challenged to add value to the journalism profession by advocating good governance and social engineering in their reportage.
The Senior Political Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state, Honourable Funkekeme Solomon, gave the charge in Asaba when a delegation of the state executive of the National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, paid him a courtesy visit.
Honourable Solomon said it was high time women journalists came to terms with present day reality in politics as women needed to be more assertive in seeking elective positions.
He urged NAWOJ to intensify campaign on women participation in politics and solicit support for female candidates, as experience had shown that women hardly supported the political ambition of their fellow women.
The Senior POLAD enjoined women journalists to be resilient, persistent and dogged in reporting issues affecting women, stressing that they should strictly monitor and evaluate policy direction of government for women.
Honourable Solomon commended Delta NAWOJ for its programmes geared towards the wellbeing of women and the girl child in the state and pledged the support of his office in achieving set goals.
Earlier, the chairperson, NAWOJ, Delta state, Comrade Patricia Gbemudu, who led the delegation, congratulated the Senior Political Adviser on his appointment, describing him as a senior colleague with passion for the journalism profession.
Comrade Gbemudu informed the Senior POLAD that beyond journalistic duties, the association was involved in sensitisation, advocacy and other activities aimed at protecting the rights of women and the girl child, as well as enhancing their wellbeing.
She said Delta NAWOJ would remain a voice to the voiceless, especially on issues bordering on violence, and solicited the support of the Office of the Senior Political Adviser towards achieving set goals.
