The monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Delta state took place on Saturday, with the State Waste Management Board focusing on the clearing of illegal dump sites on the gateway to the Asaba Airport, in the state capital.
The Board mobilized men and materials to evacuate the dump sites on the expressway, which the Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Chinye, said constituted a menace to the environment.
Mr Chinye said the Board was concerned about the dumping of refuse in unauthorised places and had consistently evacuated such refuse on the Onitsha – Benin expressway only for them to resurface after each evacuation.
He appealed to those behind the illegal act to desist from it and instead use the approved dump site on the Ibusa – Ogwashi Uku road, just as he warned that anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately would face appropriate sanctions.
The Chairman maintained that the Board under his watch would stop at nothing in ensuring proper management of waste, reiterating the need for residents of the state, particularly those in Asaba and other urban towns, to register with Private Sector Participants for proper disposal of their waste.
He said a unified state sanitation task force would soon be inaugurated by the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to enforce obedience to environmental laws and advised residents to develop the habit of keeping their environment clean.
