Nigerians have been asked to use the occasion of the 59th Independence anniversary of the nation to reflect on where they are coming from, where they are now and where they hope to be as a people.
The Senior POLAD to the Governor of Delta state, Honourable Funkekeme Solomon, made the call in a congratulatory message to Deltans and Nigerians on the Independence anniversary.
Honourable Solomon recalled the historical account of how Nigeria gained independence through the sacrifices and high fighting spirit of foremost nationalists, including Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Olayinka Herbert Macaulay and Chief Anthony Enahoro, which led to the lowering of the Union Jack of the United Kingdom and the hoisting of the Nigerian Flag on October 1, 1960.
While paying tribute to the great heroes for their roles in Nigeria’s journey to independence, the Senior Political Adviser urged Nigerians to always reflect on the dreams of the founding fathers, who had to sink their differences to emancipate Nigeria from the shackles of imperialism, with an eye on one indivisible entity.
Honourable Solomon said although it was not yet Uhuru for Nigerians, the future looked bright if only Nigerians, particularly the leaders would think of others first and self last, and if the led would show interest in governance and support their leaders to do the right thing.
He said unity was key to Nigeria’s corporate existence, stressing that every Nigerian must shun division along ethnic, religious and political lines and put the interest of the nation above other considerations for the overall good of all.
Honourable Solomon challenged the youth, particularly in Delta state, to strive to build their capacity rather than engage in social vices, adding that they should take advantage of the numerous opportunities created by the Okowa administration to positively shape their future.
