Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged Nigerians to embrace selflessness and sacrifice if they must rebuild the nation.

He made the call at an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Bishop’s Court, Asaba, to mark the country’s 59th Independence anniversary.

The Governor said nation building was a collective responsibility, adding that the process should begin at the home with the rebuilding of the family structure where parents could direct children aright.

Okowa also urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to be part of the rebuilding process, challenging them to emulate the biblical Prophet Nehemiah who, from his comfort zone abroad, was concerned about the problems in his native Jerusalem, prayed and assembled follow citizens and friends to return and rebuilt the city.

He said Nigerians and the church must continue to pray and fast for the nation, while public office holders should render the best of service to the people and not be lord over them.

The Governor congratulated Nigerians, particularly Deltans, on the anniversary and urged them not to despair irrespective of the challenges facing the nation.

Earlier in a sermon, the Bishop of Asaba, Anglican Communion, Right  Reverend Justus Mogekwu, urged leaders to look up to God for wisdom to govern the people.

He expressed dismay at the prevailing hard times in the country, saying Nigeria was not what it should be and Nigerians must pray hard for the country to get better.

The service featured special prayers for the state and the country, as well as the leaders.
