Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has called for effective fire fighting service in the country to minimise the effect of fire incidents on the people.

The Governor made the call while inaugurating two fire fighting trucks procured by the Federal Fire Service for its zonal office in Asaba.
Tagged Zone K, the Service covers Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa, with Asaba as headquarters.

Okowa advised that for any outbreak of fire, it was important for speedy efforts to be made to curtail the extent of damage that it might cause, describing the procurement of the fire fighting trucks and the choice of Asaba as the Zonal Headquarters for Zone K as a welcome development.

He said Delta had an efficient Fire Service and the addition, which would see the Federal Fire Service playing complementary roles, would be of great assistance to the State as it would help to attend to many areas, bearing in mind the many urban towns in the State.
The Governor thanked the Federal Fire Service for choosing Delta as zonal headquarters and assured that his administration would cooperate with the Service to enable it succeed in its activities.

Earlier, the Comptroller – General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr Ibrahim Liman, said the organisation, as the apex fire fighting outfit in Nigeria, was charged with monitoring developments in the Fire Services across the country, especially with regards to the preparedness status of fire fighting mobile and fixed assets.

Liman said only a few of the states that owned Fire Services maintainer them and available records showed that Delta State had done well in that regard.
