A Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Security, Comrade Ezekiel Daniel, has said journalists are central to his efforts at assisting Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in achieving sustainable peace and security in the state.
He made the assertion when he visited the NUJ Temporary Secretariat in Asaba to seek the collaboration of media practitioners in the delivery of the mandate of his office.
Ezekiel, an Activist, who is from Warri North, said he decided to connect with the media, believing that no government or its functionaries could succeed in office without the indispensable collaboration of the media.
The SSA affirmed that so far in his three weeks old appointment, he had visited some flashpoints in the state, including Onwian, to hold meetings with them on the need to sustain the peace initiative of the Governor.
He also said he had visited Sapele Local Government Area for an on the spot assessment of the area now being largely invaded by suspected Yahoo Plus criminals, pointing out that at the meeting with some youths in the area, he tasked them on the need to be on the watch out for anything that could impede security and undermine peace in Sapele and Delta in general.
Ezekiel said having acknowledged peace as a veritable template for achieving progress and development, with security and vigilance playing key roles, government was deploying every legitimate means, including advocacy, collaborative effort among others to bring about peace in the state.
The SSA maintained that the media could do a lot towards achieving the Stronger Delta vision of the Governor and thanked the NUJ for the warm reception accorded him.
Responding, the NUJ Chairman, Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu congratulated the SSA on his appointment, noting that he had demonstrated enough zeal to succeed in his assignment.
