Anambra State government has asked the federal government to build more students hostels within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Governor Willie Obiano, who made the call during a courtesy visit by the Governing Council and Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, said the measure would help to tackle the menace of cultism and drug abuse among students.
Governor Obiano stressed that education was important to his administration, noting that building hostels within the campus would go a long way in monitoring the activities of students, rather than have them live outside the campus.
The Governor called on the National Universities Commission to look into the disparity in admission cut off marks in Nigerian Universities to ensure uniformity.
While assuring the University of support in its planned School of Agriculture project at Ifite-Ogwari, Governor Obiano announced his plan to upgrade the Ifite-Ogwari Primary Healthcare Center to a hospital and provide enough security.
In his remarks, the chairman, Governing Council of the University, Alhaji Aziz Bello, called for a more robust relationship between the State government and the University and asked Anambra government to intervene in key areas of need in the University.
Alhaji Bello was represented by a member of the Governing Council, Alhaji Issa Modibo, accompanied by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Esimone.
