Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah, has said the current recruitment of teachers by State Post Primary Education Board (PPEB) is to reduce the effect of shortage of teachers on public schools in the state.

The Commissioner disclosed this on Friday when he visited the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, venue of the screening of successful candidates for employment into the Delta State Unified Teaching Service.

Chief Ukah said the state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, was determined to ensure that the education sector of the state was brought to a level where students in public schools in the state could academically compete favourably with their peers around the world.

The Commissioner said the recruitment exercise that culminated in the appointment of one thousand teachers passed through a transparent process devoid of lobbying, adding that anyone who was employed got the job on merit.

Chief Ukah admonished the newly recruited teachers to be diligent in their duties and ensure that the knowledge they had acquired in their various fields of study would be imparted to the students they would be assigned to teach.

He said the ministry would organise training and induction programmes for the newly recruited teachers from the 16th of September to the 21st of September, 2019 to get them acquainted with what was required of them in the service of the state government.

The Commissioner warned them against lobbying for posting as their rule of engagement made it clear they would be posted to teach in rural areas for a minimum period of 5 years before they could be reposted.

Those recruited are to teach English language, Further Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Basic Science, Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology and Physics.
