The new commissioner, Delta State Bureau of Special Duties, Mr Mofe Pirah, has assumed duty with an assurance that the predicted flooding by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, will not pose any serious challenge to the state government.
Mr Pirah, while taking over from the Permanent Secretary, Mr Benson Oburho, who took charge of affairs of the Bureau after the dissolution of the last State Executive Council, said all relevant agencies in disaster management in the state were on the alert and had mapped out strategies to manage the consequences of the predicted flooding in the 17 flood prone local government areas of the state.
The Commissioner, who was sworn-in on Wednesday by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, said he was in a familiar terrain, having been a Commissioner on two occasions, promising to bring his wealth of experience to bear in pushing for things that would facilitate the realization of set goals.
Mr Pirah noted that the Bureau needed to collaborate with public spirited individuals and organizations to be able to effectively manage emergency situations and called on donor agencies at the state, national and international levels to partner with the Bureau in delivering its mandate.
He solicited the support of the Directors and staff of the Bureau, the agencies and Boards under its supervision, assuring them that he would provide the leadership needed to give them job satisfaction.
Earlier, the PS, Mr Benson Oburho, acquainted the Commissioner with the operations of the Bureau which has the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, the State Fire Service and the Christian and Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards under its supervision.
Mr Oburho congratulated Mr Pirah on his appointment, saying that the Bureau was lucky to have him as Commissioner.
The PS pledged the support of the Directors and staff of the Bureau for the Commissioner to enable him to succeed and urged him to imbibe the political will that would take the Bureau to greater heights.
The brief but impressive ceremony was witnessed by the Director of SEMA, Mr Karo Ovemeso and the Director of the State Fire Service, Mr Eugene Oziwele, among others.
