The Delta state government has urged people living in flood-prone areas of the state to urgently relocate to safer areas as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned that the level of water in the River Niger is rising.

The decision to sound the note of warning was taken at the inaugural second term meeting of the State Executive Council presided over by the state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Briefibg journalists on Tuesday shortly after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said Exco took some far reaching decisions among which was to enlighten Deltans, especially those living on the bank of the River Niger, about the warning by NEMA and the need for them to urgently relocate to safer grounds.

“Our Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa presided at the Exco meeting and the issue of safety of our people in riverine communities was seriously discussed; measures are being put in place to ensure that the flood situation is properly managed. Recall that our Governor was very proactive in managing the flood situations in the previous years and we are calling on our people to start relocating now,” Mr Aniagwu said.

The Commissioner for Works, Chief James Auguye in his contribution, disclosed that Exco also approved the construction of two more storm control drains to channel water from the Okotomi axis in Okpanam to Iyi Okwu stream and another from the Central Hospital to Ralph Uwechue Street.
