The Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State, has passed a Vote of No Confidence on the Executive of the State Council of the union.

The chapel in an emergency meeting on Wednesday in Asaba resolved that the state NUJ Executive has been carrying out union activities largely without recourse to the union’s constitution.

A statement signed by the Chairman of Resolution Drafting Committee, Monday Osayande, Secretary Omo Julius Onabu, and member Utulu Valentine, warned chapel members to disassociate themselves from the state council activities till further notice.

While lamenting the purported suspension of some members as illegal and unconstitutional; without recourse to article 7(1,2&3), the chapel further said the action of the State Exco had left a sour taste in the mouths of members as the council leadership embarked on a courtesy call on the same Police Command while the purported embargo on the coverage of police activities was still in force.

The resolution which was copied to the National President, NUJ, National Vice-President, NUJ Zone F, CPS to Governor of Delta State and Ministry of Information, Delta State, described the collection of professional fees of correspondents chapel members without official acknowledgment receipts months after as an aberration.

“That taking the ridiculous decision on the so-called suspension further, the NUJ Council leadership proceeded to make public via the print and electronic media the members affected without official communication to the Chapel and affected members”

“Based on the foregoing, the members resolved to pass a No-Confidence Vote on the Comrade Michael Ikeogwu-led Executive of the the Delta State Council of the NUJ; and, consequently advise our chapel members to boycott the state Council activities till further notice”

Trouble started a week ago when the state council of NUJ announced the immediate suspension of over 30 of its members from the union and its activities for attending a dinner organised by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Adeleke Adeyinka.
