The Chairman of the Anambra State Vigilante Supervisory Committee and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Vigilante Matters, Chief Ikechukwu Aduba, says there is urgent need top retrain and equip vigilante operatives in order to effectively tackle the prevailing herdsmen menace and other criminal activities in the country.
He made this known during the passing out parade of
retrained vigilante operatives at Nimo in Njikoka local government
area.
Chief Aduba identified other social malaise which need to be checkmated at the grassroots level as, rising crime rate, cultism and prevalence of hard
drug and their consumption by miscreants in various communities in Nigeria.
He also stressed the need for establishment of what he referred to as; “functional Town
Supervisory Security Committees” to be headed by traditional rulers as
Chairmen and Presidents-General, as Secretaries in addition to the
Divisional Police Officers, Chairmen and Vigilante Commanders as
members.
The State Vigilante Supervisory Committee Chairman who is a retired Commissioner of Police also called on the various communities in Anambra State to assist government in financing
their vigilante activities, and gave kudos to the Royal Father of
Nimo, Igwe Maximus Oliobi for setting the pace in that direction.
For his part, Igwe Oliobi assured that he would leave no stone
unturned in order to fortify vigilante activities within the ambit of
the law in his community.
The passing out parade of the retrained vigilante operatives in Nimo was witnessed by the traditional Prime Minister of the town and former Chief Judge of Anambra State, retired Justice G. U. Ononiba and a retired Assistant Police Commissioner, Sir Charles Osegbue among others.
The event equally featured presentation of certificates to the
retrained vigilante operatives by the traditional ruler of the town,
Igwe Oliobi.
